The Data team is passionate about creating new products through rigorous analysis of data to draw highly-relevant, accurate and timely “alpha generating” quantitative insights.

The Data Engineering Intern role is a unique opportunity for someone with a strong passion for programming, big data, and the cloud.  This position will be responsible for the planning and implantation of proof-of-concept development projects and for evaluating next generation tools.  The Data Engineering Intern will report to the VP of Technology for Data and work along-side our financial analysts and data scientist


What You’ll Do:

  • Example Proof-of-Concept Programming Projects
    • Analyze SQL query performance issues and devise and implement improvements (SQL)
    • Create solution for containerizing Python ETL scripts and executing them in the in the cloud (Python, SQL, AWS, Azure)
    • Test high memory options for analytic models (Python, AWS, Azure)
    • Test migrating analytical warehouse queries to Spark on AWS (Python, SQL, EMR, Zeppelin)
    • Create simple UI workflows (HTML, Flask, AWS)
  • Product testing and evaluation
    • Evaluate cloud ETL/ELT and batch-job orchestration tools (Talend and beyond)
    • Evaluate data sharing and delivery tools (Power BI, Tableau and the competition)

What You Have:

  • An interest in transforming big data in the cloud with Python and SQL
  • Strong grasp of database concepts – Normalization, relationships,
  • Expertise with Python or equivalent
  • Fluent with SQL
  • Hands on with experience/coursework with containers and cloud
  • Meticulous, organized, proactive, critical thinker with high level of attention to detail
  • Excellent communication skills; both written and verbal
